DETERMINATION OF COATING THICKNESS - INDUSTRIAL STANDARD IN THE PHYSICS PRACTICAL EDUCATION
Original language description
The working surfaces of the modern devices parts are most commonly coated by many types of thin films. These films significantly improve mechanical, chemical and optical properties of working surfaces. Nowadays, almost no working surface could sustain its loading without being coated by appropriate thin coating. Due to this industrial state-of-the-art, the students should meet some of these technologies during their study at the technical university. In the engineering practice, the most useful coatingthickness evaluation method is the ball-cratering (calotest). The students' laboratory experiment consists of grinding out the ball-crater in selected sample of thin coating. According to the most practically applicable thin coatings, the thickness of TiN, TiC, CrN, CrCN, and several types of diamond-like structures (DLC's) is determined.
