Research Findings on the Process of Locating Suitable Areas for Implementing Shared Spaces

  • Original language description

Shared space is an urban design concept that eliminates traditional traffic management facilities and is intended to provide equitable usage for all road users. However, there is a lack of established methodology for calculating its capacity and setting parameters. This paper presents evidence for the need to develop a methodology to calculate shared space capacity and define appropriate parameters. The study describes the characteristics of shared space from a traffic perspective, including its benefits and drawbacks, and distinguishes it from other types of calmed zones. The proposed methodology outlines the steps required to determine the capacity of shared space, drawing parallels to the calculation of uncontrolled intersections. Finally, the paper addresses the selection of optimal shared space locations based on an evaluation of relative accident rates.
