Pedestrian Safety in the Immediate Vicinity of the Road
Original language description
Pedestrian safety is one of the topics that must be addressed as part of a comprehensive view on road safety. Pedestrian movement in the immediate vicinity of the road is directed by a combination of pavement areas and pedestrian crossings. It is the pedestrian crossing that can be clearly identified as the most risky section of the pedestrian infrastructure, primarily due to the increased local concentration of pedestrians. Inappropriately designed or missing pavement areas pose a linear rather than a point-based risk to road traffic. Particularly risky are such sections where motorised road users do not expect pedestrians to enter the roadway, which inadequate and discontinuous pedestrian infrastructure amplifies. However, a considerable amount of literature has been devoted to pedestrian crossings, whereas the topic of safe design of pavement areas has been rarely addressed. This article presents an analysis of the safety of pedestrian infrastructure in the immediate vicinity of the road based on already provided road safety inspection. The aim of this article is to provide information on the problems often associated with pedestrian infrastructure.
