Steering Wheel Angle Analysis in Evasive Maneuvers
Original language description
This article deals with the dynamics of the steering wheel angle and steering angle velocity during evasive maneuvers. Main goal is to better understand driver behavior in critical situations and to improve the analysis of traffic accidents. A series of controlled experiments was conducted with four male drivers and two types of vehicles performing simulated evasive maneuvers at three speeds and three levels of intensity. For each maneuver, the steering angle velocity and steering wheel angle were measured and analyzed. The results show that the intensity of the maneuver has a significant effect on the steering angle velocity, while the vehicle speed has less of an effect—except for sharp maneuvers at higher speeds, where drivers are limited by safety considerations and reduce the intensity of their steering. A comparison with data from Event Data Recorders highlights the limitations of the current data recording frequency. This finding can lead to misinterpretation of driver behavior during accident reconstruction. The results show the importance of driving analysis and the need for higher resolution data to improve the accuracy of forensic analysis.
