Separation of Radionuclides from Spent Decontamination Solutions onto Selective Inorganic-Organic Composite Absorbers

  • Original language description

Using inorganic absorbers, the possibility of direct separation of radionuclides from decontamination solutions produced in nuclear power plant operation was followed. Real acidic waste from the AP-Citrox process (KDR solution) and simulated waste from electrochemical decontamination (Electrolysate) were used. Mass distribution coefficients for the uptake of targeted radionuclides were determined and chemical stability of individual materials evaluated in batch tests. Using modified polyacrylonitrile binding matrix, the most promising of them were granulated and tested in dynamic column experiments, consequently. Results obtained in the both KDR and Electrolysate solutions were similar. They revealed that direct separation of radionuclides was not possible because of complexants (oxalic acid, citric acid, EDTA) present in studied solution. Thus, the degradation of complexants (e.g. by photocatalytic decomposition) prior to sorption is necessary.
