Neutron Diffraction Study of Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3-gamma (gamma=0 and 0.07)
Original language description
The as-prepared sample of cobaltite Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3-gamma with an oxygen deficiency gamma=0.07 (formal cobalt valence 3.35) shows a non-uniform state where a ferromagnetic metallic phase (TC=75 K) coexists with the low-temperature phase of distinctly smaller unit cell and insulating character, formed below 30 K. In the oxygenated cobaltite (gamma=0, formal cobalt valence 3.5), the ferromagnetism is suppressed and the sample is completely transformed to the low-temperature phase at an increased temperature of 70 K. The different structure of the ferromagnetic metallic and paramagnetic insulating phases is attributed to the spin-state transition of Co3+/Co4+ ions.
