Comparative Study of Case-hardened and Nitrided Samples by Using Barkhausen Noise Analysis and X-Ray Diffraction

  • Original language description

The aim of the contribution was to present results of a comparative study of steel samples with different surface treatment by using Barkhausen noise analysis and X-ray diffraction technique. Case-hardened and nitrided components for car industry made from rolled steel sheet C10 with case-depth from 0.15 to 0.25 mm are investigated. Since case-hardening leads to hard case and soft core formation, this treatment increases wear resistance and fatigue strength of machine parts. Nitriding, in addition, increases corrosion resistance and reduces friction coefficient. Material characterization was carried out with a Barkhausen noise device; X-ray diffraction measurement of surface residual stresses was done as well. Depth profile of measured characteristicswas obtained in the case of one nitrided and one case-hardened sample by step by step layers' removing using electrolytical etching. Owing to the complex shape of investigated samples, measurements carried out on selected segments areas w
