Spectroscopics and Laser Properties of Er3+-doped Fluoride Laser Ceramics
Original language description
Erbium ions are known to have good fluorescence properties in the mid-infrared spectral region near 3 um. That is why the investigation of fluorescence properties of Er3+ ions at the 4I11/2-4I13/2 mid-IR transition in recently developed CaF2:Er3+ high-optical-quality ceramics is of interest. The decay curves of Er3+ ions in CaF2 ceramics (Er3+ concentration of 5.5%) were measured for 4I11/2 and 4I13/2 electronic levels involved in mid IR lasing for low excitation intensities. The lifetime of the lower 4I13/2 level (13 ms) is about 1.5 times longer than that for the upper 4I11/2 level (8.5 ms). To investigate cross-relaxation channels depopulating the lower 4I13/2 level for 3 um laser operation, direct excitation of 4I13/2 by an Er:glass laser (1.53 um)was applied. The measured fluorescence up-conversion spectra for CaF2:Er3+ ceramics in visible and near-infrared spectral range were measured depending on excitation energy. It was demonstrated that for obtaining near-IR (990 nm) fluores
