The effect of athermal and isothermal ω phase particles on elasticity of β-Ti single crystals

  • Original language description

Elastic constants of single crystals of metastable β-titanium alloys with particles of both athermal and isothermal ω phase were studied by ultrasonic methods in the temperature range of 0 °C–180 °C. It was shown that the presence of these particles leads to stiffening and isotropization of the material and has also a significant impact on the internal friction. Athermal ω particles were shown to influence the internal friction more strongly than isothermal ones; on the other hand, the presence of the isothermal ω particles in the material leads to stronger stiffening of the elastic constants and also to their stronger temperature dependence. The effective isotropic elastic constants of the isothermal ω particles were calculated from the comparison of elastic constants of samples with different volume fractions of these particles.
