Influence of the dose rate of gamma irradiation and some other conditions on the radiation protection of microbial cells by scavenging of OH radicals
Original language description
A protective effect of methanol and ethanol as the scavengers of OH radicals on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and bacteria Escherichia coli irradiated with gamma-radiation of the Co-60 source was studied in a wide interval of irradiation conditions. Namely, its dependence on the dose rate was determine and the influence of hypothermia was examined. The results were evaluated by the counting of the colonies arising from surviving cells. The protective effect increased with the dose rate. The influence of hypothermia was not observed.
