Quantum Technology in Future Warfare: What is on the Horizon?
Original language description
Quantum technology is referred to as an emerging and disruptive technology by NATO, and as an emerging technology of global strategic importance by the EU. It has also been recognised as a technology of strategic significance with the potential to provide China with “a decisive advantage in future peacetime and wartime competition alike”. Quantum technology is a prime example of dual-use technology, with relevant applications in both civil and military use. Therefore, it is highly pertinent to address the question of what impact quantum technologies can have on future conflicts and wars. In this report, a basic overview of quantum technology is first provided, with suggestions of possible military applications. This is followed by a section describing how quantum technologies can be approached from different perspectives for military applications. Then, warfare domains with expected large quantum impacts are outlined, and the most uncertain aspects and open questions are highlighted.
