Kate Otten calls herself architect of place. She refers to her roots and context of a landscape. She works with traditional materials and techniques. Her work is influenced by politics, gender in architecture and the place that architecture “inhabits”. Buildings are created as a conscious and intuitive response to various influences as well as the place itself. Kate Otten believes that houses should be not only a functional space but that they also have to meet emotional and spiritual needs of their users. In her lecture, this appreciated South African architect will speak about conceptual thinking upon which she “builds” her architecture.
