Esmolol abolishes repolarization gradients in diabetic rabbit hearts
Original language description
The study investigated the contribution of abnormal sympathetic influences to the changes of ventricular repolarization pattern in rabbits with short-term diabetes. The experiments were performed in anaesthetized 11 alloxan-induced (4-5 weeks) diabetic and 13 healthy rabbits. Unipolar electrograms were recorded from 64 ventricular epicardial leads prior to and after the injection of beta1-blocker esmolol (0.5 mg/kg, i.v.). Activation times (dV/dt min during QRS), end of repolarization times (dV/dt max during ST-T) and their differences (activationrecovery intervals) were determined. In diabetic rabbits, activation-recovery intervals were longer in the left ventricular apex than in its base, on the right ventricular free wall than on the left ventricular free wall, and on the anterior surface than on the posterior surface (P<0.05). Injection of esmolol in control group resulted in the development of the significant apicobasal difference in repolarization durations (P<0.05). In the diabe
