This article deals with the issue of coping with psychological and physical consequences of emergency situations in members of the Integrated Rescue System. The up-to-date nature of this topic stems from the arduousness of the job, especially from the mental stress affecting the staff. The theoretical part defines mental stress, its impact on an individual and options of prevention. It also deals with mental conditions occurring frequently in people facing stress. The theoretical part is followed by an empirical part. The research is created on the basis of completed anonymous questionnaires distributed among 539 responders. The obtained data are processed in the form of charts. The conclusion summarises results and proposals for the practice.
