Microbial contamination of HEPA filters of household vacuum cleaners

  • Original language description

High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are widely used for their capability to trap corpuscular particles, smells and even microorganisms. The main goal of our work was to study bacterial contamination of the household vacuum cleaner air filters. Three HEPA filters from household vacuum cleaners coming from one household were examined. The filters were obtained during filter exchange, removed aseptically and transported in plastic bags to the laboratory. Bacteriological tests, proteomic study MALDI TOF mass spectrometry and PCR tests FilmArray® were employed in the investigation. All bacteriological tests performed identified bacilli commonly present in the air, dust or soil. Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtillis and Bacillus lichenificans were detected on both inlet and outlet surfaces of the filter 1 and 2. Bacillus lichenificans was detected only on the inlet surface of the filter 3, while B. cereus and B. subtilis were cultivated from both sides of this filter. Filter number 3 underwent the PCR test searching particularly fo viral pathogens. The PCR test in real time arrangement did not detect any viral nucleic acid on the filter 3.
