Microbial Contamination of Air filters in the Automotive Air-conditioning System
Original language description
The topic of the study is microbial contamination of air filters in automotive cabin air-conditioning system. The microbial contamination was examined on the outlet and the inlet sides of air filters taken out from the automobiles during regular maintenance after 1-year service or after 20 000 km operation. The samples from the outlet and the inlet surfaces were obtained by dry swabbing technique. Cultivation of viable bacteria with quantification, proteomic study and real-time PCR were performed to evaluate the microbial contamination of examined air filters. The bacteria of the genera Bacillus and Brevibacillus predominated. The most common bacteria were B. cereus, B. licheniformis and B. subtilis. The contamination was lower on the outlet surface of the filters. No nucleic acids of human pathogens were found by multiplex PCR. We have not found any pathogenic bacteria that could represent health risk for the passengers of automobiles equipped with air-conditioning system.
