The use of functionalized nanofiber membrane as a system for Escherichia coli detection

  • Original language description

Due to its widespread occurrence, Escherichia coli is one of the best-studied microorganisms. Although we encounter this bacterium primarily as a symbiotic organism, it can cause several problems. Among the diseases caused by E. coli are mainly urinary tract infections, septicemia, pneumonia, peritonitis, gastroenteritis, and neonatal meningitis. In addition to these pathological conditions, E. coli is also responsible for food-borne diseases. As with other pathogens, rapid and easy detection is essential for proper and effective treatment. This work aimed to design a new and portable method suitable for fast detection of Escherichia coli. Using antibody-functionalized PAN nanofibers, bacteria were successfully captured and detected from the air, and the experiments were evaluated by measuring the optical density of created bacterial suspensions. The experiment results show that the functionalization of the nanofiber membrane increased efficiency by up to 30 % compared to unmodified nanofibers. Thus, the modified nanofibers bring an attractive solution for the biological sensing of pathogenic microorganisms.
