Educational Pulse Oximeter Controlled by Microprocessor
Original language description
One of the foremost vital signs observed is monitoring patients' oxygenation using pulse oximeters. Therefore, understanding this continuously improving pulse oximetry technology and its relation to the education of Biomedical engineers is essential. The aim of this project is to design a pulse oximeter that will allow students to view and analyze the plethysmographic curve, obtain the peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) value in percentage and obtain the heart rate (HR) value in beats per minute (bpm). The hardware consists of a commercially available SpO2 sensor, Arduino microprocessor and a data preprocessing circuit. The software part is implemented in Simulink. The flashing of the LEDs is controlled by software with a frequency of 200 Hz. Arduino microprocessor reads the signals for red and infrared radiation. Subsequently, two plethysmographic curves are software filtered, and SpO2 and HR values are determined. The implemented pulse oximeter PulseOx was tested on a SpO2 simulator - perfusion index (PI) set at 20%, and the HR set at 60 bpm, SpO2 values ranging from 60% to 100% were measured with a mean difference between the SpO2 simulator and PulseOx of -0.23% and a standard deviation difference of 2.73 %. For HR values from 40 bpm to 180 bpm, values with a mean difference of 2.26 bpm were recorded.
