Deterioration Model for Large Reinforced Concrete Structures
Original language description
Durability limit states defined in ISO 13823 may be of uttermost importance for serviceability as well as ultimate limit states of reinforced concrete structures. However, practical applications of durability assessments may be difficult as basic variables influencing structural durability are often random quantities with a considerable spatial variability. A probabilistic model is thus proposed to cover uncertainties related to basic variables and facilitate decision-making concerning structural durability. As an example carbonation of a large concrete surface is investigated. Spatial variability of the carbonation depth and concrete cover is taken into account in a probabilistic optimization of concrete cover. It appears that the spatial variabilitysignificantly affects structural durability and the optimum thickness of the concrete cover particularly for large surfaces.
