Durability Assessment of Large Surfaces
Original language description
Initiation limit states defined in ISO 13823 (2008) may be of uttermost importance for serviceability as well as ultimate limit states of civil engineering structures. Durability assessments and optimisation studies may be difficult as basic variables are often random quantities with a considerable spatial variability. Applications of common discretisation techniques may be time consuming, particularly in case of optimisation studies. A simplified probabilistic model for spatial variability is thus adopted from the bulletin of fib (2006), enabling durability analysis using efficient FORM/SORM methods. Basic features of the model are illustrated by a simplified example.A case study is then focused on a cooling tower exposed to carbonation. It appears that the reliability level associated with durability is significantly affected by the model uncertainties that should be further investigated. The study reveals that the effect of a size of the surface area on the optimum concrete cover an
