Uncertainties in Crack Width Verification of Reinforced Concrete Structures
Original language description
The reliability of reinforced concrete structures designed according to Eurocodes with respect to the serviceability limit state of crack width is analysed using probabilistic methods. Uncertainties in basic variables and model outcomes are described. It is argued that structural design should comply with the criteria of codes of practice. However, these criteria may be inappropriate for assessment of existing structures where wider crack widths might be acceptable due to high repair costs or a limited required residual lifetime of a structure. The case study of a representative slab bridge illustrates theoretical principles. It is shown that reliability of the slab with respect to the crack width seems to satisfy the required target level recommended in EN1990. However, reliability level considerably decreases for large concrete covers and reinforcing bar diameters.
