Assessment of Actual Conditions of Posttensioned Cables for Reliability Analysis of Existing Bridges

  • Original language description

This contribution discusses how to take into account the actual conditions of posttensioned grouted cables based on visual and corrosion surveys in reliability assessments of existing concrete bridges. To verify the conditions of prestressing reinforcement, the destructive probes to the prestressing cables are commonly used. Based on a limited number of probes carried out in selected (a few) locations, it is necessary to rely on the engineering judgement to model actual conditions of the bridge in the global analysis. It is widely recognised that corrosion of prestressing reinforcement can significantly affect structural reliability. The corrosion development is mainly influenced by the quality of grouting, leakages and chloride contamination. As the evaluation of corrosion conditions based on limited surveys is subjective and largely depends on the experience of those responsible for survey and analysis of its results, there is an urgent need to harmonise the approach to these assessments. Therefore, this study presents a preliminary classification of the conditions of tendons affected by corrosion and discusses how this information could be used in reliability analysis of existing bridges, taking into account other factors such as structural system and required remaining service life. Common scenarios of corrosion development and its effect on structural reliability are described. Case studies illustrate applications of the methodology.
