The Surface Treatment of Nanofibers for Biomedical Applications

  • Original language description

Nanofibers prepared by electrospinning or forcespinning methods are unique materials in regenerative medicine. Nanofibers from synthetic polymers have too hydrophobic a surface for cell attachment. In the pursuit to obtain an appropriate cell response, there emerges a need to modify the surface of the nanofibers. The surface chemistry of nanofibers can be changed in various ways. Treatment with non-thermal plasma is an effective way to modify a nanofibrous surface without toxics being left, as wet chemical methods do. In addition to this, plasma treatment changes only surface properties, not bulk ones. Grafting brings possibilities to cover nanofibrous surfaces with the molecules of ECM.
