The chapter covers the balancing of operational and bundled energy and greenhouse gas emissions in building renovation projects. The first section describes building design strategies, followed by a section on extending the lifetime of existing buildings and significantly reducing the operational energy demand of buildings. In the last part of the chapter, examples of life extension of existing buildings and significant reduction of operational energy consumption using prefabricated building modules are given.
