X and Gamma Radiation Attenuation in Personal Radiation Shielding Protective Clothing
Original language description
A collection of personal radiation shielding protective clothing (RSPC), suitable for use in case of accidents in nuclear facilities or radiological emergency situations involving radioactive agents, was gathered and tested at the National Institute for NBC Protection (SUJCHBO v.v.i.), Czech Republic. RSPC are protective garments with special shielding layers of heavy metals or their alloys for protection against penetrating ionizing radiation. The RSPC collection can be divided into two groups: body overalls, covering the whole body, and local RSPC garments, covering mainly the torso and shielding radiation sensitive body organs. Attenuating qualities of individual RSPC samples were tested via spectra measurement of X and gamma radiation, penetrating them and originating from different radionuclide point laboratory sources, the gamma ray energies of which cover a broad energy range; their activities varied from 9.5 to 40.0 MBq. Gamma spectra for every radionuclide with and without RSPC samples, placed between the source and the detector, were similarly measured by handheld spectrometers, both scintillation and HPGe ones. The spectra were measured at different narrow beam geometries, adjusted using a special testing bench and a set of different collimators to reduce the build-up factor. Peaks in all spectra were located and their net peak areas were determined by the software GENIE 2000 v.3.2. The main experimentally determined quantity for individual RSPC samples was X-rays and gamma-ray attenuation for significant energies of the spectra. To describe shielding qualities of individual shielding layers materials, the energy dependences of mass attenuation coefficients were determined and compared to the referred ones for individual heavy metals. Lead equivalents were assessed for individual RSPC samples using referred lead mass attenuation coefficient values as well.
