Flow Instability and Electrical Conductivity of Composites of Hard Metal Carbides in Polymer Matrix
Original language description
Investigation of the flow behaviour of melted composites of hard metal carbide powder in a polymer matrix showed that at high filler loading (50 vol.%) in a capillary rheometer operating at a constant piston speed pressure oscillations occurred. This flow instability has been attributed to the thin interparticle layers leading to a strong particle interaction. The measurement of electric conductivity of the solid composite materials in this range of particle concentration demonstrated that its dependence on temperature suggests a specific composite structure with a great number of conducting contacts. Unlike the composites with lower particle concentration, where the expansion of the non-conducting polymer matrix with increasing temperature caused interruption of conducting paths and a rapid drop in conductivity (switching effect), at high filler content most of conducting contacts remain unchanged and conductivity decreased with temperature only slightly.
