Organically modified octadecylammonium montmorillonites (MMT-ODA) prepared using intercalation of melt octadecylamine (ODA) directly into Na+-cloisite (MMT) and also octadecylammonium/stearic acid - montmorillonites (MMT-ODA/ODCA) prepared using co-intercalation of melt stearic acid (ODCA) into MMT-ODA were studied. The resulting intercalates were evaluated using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) procedure. The XRD patterns were used for the profile fitting and decomposition of basal reflections using computer program. The MMT-ODA samples with MMT:ODA weight ratios >1 show out non-regular set of basal diffractions that indicates the mixture (or mixed-layer structure) of monolayer and bilayer ODA molecules in the silicate interlayer spacing, while in the samples MMT-ODA with MMT:ODA weight ratios Ł 1 the set of the regular arrangement of basal diffractions indicates existence of ordered periodic structure with the ODA bilayer intercalated in the interlayer spacing of MMT.
