Toughened Unsaturated Polyester Resins
Original language description
Composites made of long or even continuous glass fibbers and unsaturated polyester (UP) resins are widely applied due to low material costs, low density, ease of manufacturing and good mechanical properties. However, applications of unsaturated polyesterresins are often limited by their brittleness and susceptibility to catastrophic failure. Moreover, shrinkage of the polyester resin during cross-linking with reactive styrene monomer leads to warpage and cracking on the moulded parts. Usually, adding certain additives could solve these problems. It is believed that the mechanical and fracture properties of UP resins may be improved with the aid of elastomer additives; while shrinkage problems may be controlled by adding thermoplastic additives. This chapter discusses the effect of additives on fracture behaviour of UP resins.
