The effect of added dispersant on structure and mechanical properties of layered silicates reinforced natural and polybutadiene rubber blends

  • Original language description

This investigation describes two dispersant to obtain rubber nanocomposites based on natural rubber (NR), polybutadiene rubber (BR) and organophilic layered silicates Cloisite 15A (C15A). In order to improve the exfoliation and intercalation of the organoclay with the rubber matrix, standard mixing process of the organoclay and elastomer has been used. The effect of the addition during mixing of a coupling agent, namely bis-(trietoxysilyl-propyl)-tetrasulfan (TESPT), on the behaviour of the composites was also investigated. The results show that a low amount of organoclay (10phr) and dispersant (2phr) significantly improves the properties of natural and polybutadiene rubber blends. Strong rubber ? organoclay interaction which is attributed to a high degree of intercalation and exfoliation, as was confirmed from X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). An even further increase in the properties is observed by treating the silicate with a silane coupling agent. The s
