INVESTIGATION OF POLY(LACTIC ACID) DEGRADATION PROCESS UNDER VARIOUS ABIOTIC CONDITIONS

  • Original language description

This work deals with the influence of abiotic environmental conditions on in vitro degradation process. The investigated biodegradable polymeric samples were prepared from poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) produced by polycondensation at laboratory of Polymer Center in Zlín. This experiment was performed under two types of external conditions: in chamber with 100% relative humidity (RH) and in phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4), both of them at 37°C. Samples were exposed for 12 weeks and degradation kinetics was monitored over time by measuring molecular weight changes, weight loss, and changes in physical properties. The results show marginally slower kinetics of degradation in the environment of 100% RH. Current study demonstrated the autocatalytic effect in core of samples in PBS.
