Gas-phase Fragmentation of Cucurbit[7]uril Complexes with Selectively 2H-Labeled Bisimidazolium Salts

  • Original language description

Recently, the series of bisimidazolium salts (BIMs) has been prepared to describe interesting supramolecular properties of their complexes with cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) in the gas phase. It was demonstrated that associates of BIMs with CB7 with different arrangement exhibit different fragmentation pathways under collision induced dissociation conditions. Reversibly, this phenomenon can be employed to determine the intrinsic binding modes of supramolecular systems in the gas phase. Nevertheless, the mechanism of supramolecular aggregates fragmentation has not been explored in details. As a part of our attempt to clarify this process, we prepared BIMs selectively 2H-labeled at methylene bridges and at imidazolium C2 atom. The labeled BIMs were allowed to form supramolecular aggregates with CB7 in water solution and resulted mixtures were analyzed at length using ESI-MS facility. The detailed description of fragmentation mechanism based on analysis of tandem mass spectra up to MS4 is given.
