Pickering o/w emulsions: transdermal delivery of lipophilic actives

  • Original language description

The study was conducted with the aim to understand how the interactions between two bio-based emulsifiers, namely cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and the surface active caseinate (CAS), can influence the formation and stability of emulsion. In the next step, properties and characterization of the emulsion-based gels prepared by drying of system were evaluate with respect to adsorption of CAS and CNC. Emulsions have been prepared through different routes of CAS and CNC addition. The routes were (1) CAS and CNC simultaneously, (2) CAS first followed by CNC in a subsequent emulsification step and (3) CNC first, followed by CAS. The emulsions were characterized by laser diffraction and optical microscopy. After emulsification, the system was centrifuged and emulsion layer was separated and let dry in a form for 48 h. The emulsion-based gels were evaluated especially through amount of released oil during drying and by DMA analysis.
