    Rheology as a Tool for PLA Melt Spinnability Evaluation

    In the presented work PLA melt and PLA melts modified with various amount of plasticiser (from 2 to 8 wt.%) were employed. Mixtures of PLA a plasticizer were compound using twin screw extruder. Prepared PLA mixtures as well as pure PLA material were in the form of regranulates subsequently reprocessed into the form of nonwovens fabrics using spunbond laboratory line. Influence of additives level was directly related to the process behaviour during nonwovens fabric manufacturing. Based on the results of process stability and prepared fabrics quality it was determined that there exists optimal level of plasticizer addition to the PLA resin for an effective modification of nonwovens textile production as well as fabrics final properties modification. Consequently, the prepared blends were characterised using various rheology approaches. Firstly the shear and elongational viscosities of tested materials were determined using high pressure capillary rheometer. Corrected viscosity data – after application of Bagley and Rabinowitch corrections – was compared and no visible effect of plasticizer addition was detected. Further, the elongational viscosity of the same materials was characterised using rotational rheometer equipped with Sentmanat extensional testing platform. Obtained results also in this case did not proved any affect of plasticizer additon. Finally, the elongational behaviour of polymer melt was described using Goettfert Rheotens melt tensile tester. The visible differences could be found in the earned results of this applied methodology. Moreover the defined trends of this technique could be interconnected with the results of fabrics processing. Regarding observed results it could be said that rheological tools could be successfully applied for comparison of modified polymeric materials and it could be predicted the change in spinnability of polymer melts for the purpose of fibre and nonwovens fabrics preparation.
