Preparation of PLA/PET nano-fibrillar composite and its rheological characterization
Original language description
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a promising future material for the plastics industry because it can be obtained from renewable sources and is biodegradable. However, PLA has unsuitable material properties for some plastic industry processes, and it's necessary to modify them. For example, melt strength is adjusted by branching the polymer or by mixing with a fibrillar filler. This research aimed to prepare and study the rheological behaviour of PLA matrix composite filled with nano-fibrillated polyethene terephthalate (PET). These two materials were mixed by a twin-screw extruder, where PLA was melted and PET was stretched in a solid phase during mixing. This approach has already been done in the past years by several authors, as stated in the review article by Zhao.Several methods, like electron microscopy, elongation rheometry, DSC etc., were used for composite characterization. PET particles increase melt strength, which can be observed by measuring elongation viscosity. Higher melt strength is advantageous in the plastic industry, for example, in polymer foam production, which prevents foam from collapsing during the cooling phase.
