Functional electrospun polyvinylidene difluoride membranes with incorporated thymol or eugenol

  • Original language description

Polymer nanofibers have attracted extensive attention throughout many industries in recent years, mainly due to their specific properties. Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) exhibiting promising chemical, thermal stability, and good mechanical properties, can be applied for nanofibrous membranes production. However, the short life of these nanofibers may be limited due to their clogging by bacteria in water treatment. The functionalization of nanofibers with antibacterial substances, such as essential oil components like thymol, eugenol, linalool, cinnamaldehyde or carvacrol could prevent these negative effects. Our study deals with the preparation of electrospun PVDF-based nanofibers with incorporated essential oils, their characterization, testing their antibacterial properties by disk diffusion method and evaluation of biofilm formation on the membrane surface. The results revealed that PVDF membranes enriched with thymol and eugenol showed antifouling activity against the tested bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, these PVDF membranes could find potential application in wastewater treatment.
