The effect of extraction conditions on the antioxidant effect of lamiaceae plants

  • Original language description

Less known Lamiaceae plants such as white nettle (Lamium album), motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca), and Chinese skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) are utilized mainly because of their health promoting properties. These plants contain nutritionally and biologically important compounds such as antioxidants (vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols). The effect of the herb extraction temperature (100 °C, 80 °C, 70 °C) on the amount of polyphenols (Folin-Ciocalteu method) and antioxidant activity (DPPH, IC50, and ABTS methods) was determined. The content of plant extracts polyphenols was in the descending order: Chinese skullcap, white nettle, and motherwort. Same order of plant extracts efficiency was stated for antioxidant activity assessment. The highest extraction temperature (100 °C) was the most effective for obtaining of the highest amount of antioxidants, then the extraction at 80 °C, and the least effective was 70 °C extraction. Similar results were discovered for antioxidant activity assessment. Chinese skullcap and white nettle belong to plants with higher content of biologically active compounds and good antioxidant activity.
