Irregular Sentences in Written Texts of Czech Students
Original language description
This paper is a contribution to the discussion and analysis of irregular sentences in written language. Based on empirical evidence of written texts of Czech students, it deals with a description of various types of irregular sentences. This study’s primary purpose is to explore which irregular sentence types can be recognised in the given context with a special emphasis put on the Theme-Rheme structuring of a discourse, as well as searching for reasons why irregular sentences occur in the text. The study utilizes a corpus of texts of everyday topics written by Czech students. The focal points containing irregular sentences were analysed using the common linguistic methods with a special emphasis put on the structure of the clause and its location in the whole text. For that reason, methods of stylistics and text-analysis are also used. Based on a detailed analysis of irregular sentences from approx. 150 students’ texts the irregular sentence itself is treated from the point of view of information structuring in discourses. The interaction of syntax, text-structure and stylistics receives special attention, as each is fundamental to the production, recognition and interpretation of the irregular sentence.
