Preschool teachers’ views on education of children with a physical disability in Czech kindergartens

  • Original language description

The question of integration of children and pupils with special educational needs has been re-cently an important topic of the Czech education system. However, the attempts of MEYS (Ministry of Edu-cation, Youth and Sports) to integrate these children into ordinary schools and common education raise con-cerns of teachers and many pedagogy and psychology experts. The aim of the study was to cover attitudes of kindergarten’s teachers in the Zlín region toward the problematics of integration of children with physical dis-abilities into common kindergarten classes. We conducted questionnaire survey among teachers. The key parts of questionnaire consisted of scale items expressing respondent’s attitudes toward selected aspects of integra-tion of children with a physical disability into ordinary kindergarten. The results imply a prevailing positive attitude of teachers toward integration of children with a physical disability. They demonstrated a positive re-lationship between teacher’s length of teaching practice and his openness to children’ integration. On the con-trary, a relationship between teacher’s work experience with a child with a physical disability and his open-ness to integration of these children into ordinary kindergartens has not been proved. The research proved that the size of school does not correlate with quality of conditions for integration of children with a physical disa-bility. Based on the results, it is recommendable to diversify the offer of further education of pedagogical staff in the field of work with children with special educational needs. Nevertheless, it does not concern only health aspects and specifics of didactic methods with these children. It is also necessary to support teachers’ under-standing of social and psychological aspects of a physical disability and possible difficulties with child’s per-formance in a peer group. General perception of people with a physical disability in Czech society also plays an important role.
