The Alta Mountains represent an integral part of the World natural heritage with diverse ecosystems incorporating specific geographic and topographic zones and hosting rich and unique biotic communities. The present Altai faces an intensifying environmental stress due to global climate warming with accompanying and sometime rather pronounced natural transformations coupled with an increasing socio-economic pressure reflecting growing needs of local people and the national economies. A modern approach including a multi-level systematic biodiversity monitoring based on inter-linked geo-contextual and biotic studies applied uniformly over the bordering Altai areas offers a more effective documentation, evaluation and control of ongoing biodiversity degradation and its potential conservation than the locally applied strategies that may provide regionally incompatible and scientifically incomplete data.
