Influence of the Nanofiller Content and Type on Biodegradation of PLA Films
Original language description
Nanofillers represent an interesting way to improve especially mechanical but sometimes also other characteristic of polymer materials. In connection with biodegradable polymers there could be an obvious objection whether the nanofiller content influencematerial biodegradability. PLA films containing selected naofillers bases on modified and unmodified montmorillonites were prepared by flat head extrusion. Biodegradation of the films was evaluated from carbon dioxide emissions measured with gas chromatography under composting conditions. Surface properties of the filled and reference films were also determined and correlation between the filler content, surface characteristic, abiotic hydrolysis, and biodegradability sought. Nanofilled PLA films exhibited increased hydrophilicity which could explain somewhat faster biodegradation of the samples especially those with organically modified nanofillers.
