PLA and PLA nanocomposites; the influence of hydrolysis inhibiting additives on biodegradability
Original language description
PLA based materials can suffer from relative susceptibility of PLA towards hydrolysis. This could especially complicate thermoplastic processing of the materials because higher temperatures significantly increase the rate of hydrolytic reactions. Commercially available additives intended to stabilize PLA based materials against hydrolytic degradation were incorporated into a series of PLA and nanofiller containing PLA films. The influence of the additives on the subsequent biodegradability of the materials was evaluated. The identical films without the additives were used as the reference materials. It can be concluded that the additives retarded biodegradation of the PLA based materials investigated significantly. The effect was less pronounced in thecase of nanofilled PLA films.
