Effect of skin-core morphology on mechanical properties in injection-molded parts

  • Original language description

The presented study deals with an effect of different processing parameters during injection molding on morphological stucture and on mechanical properties. In this work tensile bars of an isotactic polypropylene were injected under different conditionsas flow rate, melt temperature and mold temperature. The morphological stucture was investigated by polarized light microscopy on a thin section cut perpendicular to the flow direction. Fountain flow in the mold cavity influenced the crystalization kinetics and the presence of three distinct crystalline zones was observed; namely, a highly oriented non-spherulitic skin, a shear-nucleated spherulitic intermediate layer, and an inner core composed of spherulites with a low orientation. The results showedthat flow rate will have the greatest influence on the thickness of the oriented skin layer. Mechanical properties of the tensile samples demonstrated, that the larger thickness of two outer skins will provide higher tensile strenght. The
