Chitosan : A versatile tool for drug and gene delivery
Original language description
Chitosan is a deacetylate chitin derivative, composed of glucosamine and N-acetyl-glucosamine units[1]. Its properties, like solubility, biodegradability, biocompatibility, mucho-adhesivity and antibacterial are directly affected by the degree of deacetylation (DD) and the molecular weight (Mw) [2]. Chitosan presents an LD50 in oral administration to humans more than 16 g kg-1 and acute toxicity tests revealed that it is safe for I.V. administration [3].
