Innovative Heat Build-Up Characterisation of Rubber under Realistic Load
Original language description
Rubber products (RPs) are exposed to multiaxial dynamic loading during service. Many RPs such as engine mounts, bushings, rubber pads, belts, tires, etc. serve as damping and wear parts. In rubber materials and thus in RPs energy transforms into heat because of dissipative processes. This leads to heat build-up (HBU), which influences dynamic as well as fracture behavior and wear thus in turn performance and durability of RPs. This paper describes the experimental measurement of HBU in a novel laboratory test to characterize frictionless in-situ the heat build-up (HBU) process inside of rubber sample. In this study, firstly the HBU for fundamental carbon black (CB) filled rubber compounds based on pristine natural rubber (NR), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and butadiene rubber (BR) has been investigated, where the expected ranking of the HBU, SBR > NR > BR from highest to lowest has been observed. As next series of rubber compounds applied for multi-purpose tire (MPT) have been investigated and HBU behavior were discussed. Characterizing HBU in a laboratory test set-up promises to gain valuable information of the material in an early stage of part development before RPs have been produced or even before designs are finalized. This approach promises to optimize RPs in terms of performance and durability. Further, it enables to fasten development times and minimize extensive field tests.
