Influence of filler and processing conditions on structure and rheological properties of polypropylene composites

  • Original language description

The most common approach to suppress flammability of plastic materials is to use particulate fire retardants that, however, significantly affect rheological properties of the system and, thus, its processability. Moreover, to fulfill legislative demands often high loadings of the fire retardant systems have to be used, which not only affect the rheological properties, but also their dispersion and distribution within polymer matrix that further determine overall properties of the composite. In this work, systems based on polypropylene with different fire retardants were characterized using rheological measurements. Rotational rheometry was used to evaluate flow properties and structure of polypropylene with various content of expandable graphite as a tabular filler. Preparation process of the compound was evaluated through the rotational rheometry giving information about distribution of particles within the matrix and, furthermore, effect of processing conditions on rheological parameters the systems was investigated applying the Cole-Cole plot of imaginary and real parts of viscosity.Another system under investigation was polypropylene combined with dihydrogen ammonium phosphate, which is state-of-the-art flame retardant and is a part of many modern intumescent systems. Unlikely expandable graphite or other solid particulate fire retardants, crystals of dihydrogen ammonium phosphate melt close to processing temperature of polyolefins. Compounds were prepared at three temperatures 190 °C, 210 °C, 230 °C which are below the melting temperature, close to melting temperature and above the melting temperature, respectively. It was found that processing temperature of a compound polypropylene/dihydrogen ammonium phosphate significantly affects its rheological properties due to phase transition of dihydrogen ammonium phosphate and its interaction with polypropylene, which thus then determine the processability of the system.
