Elimination of contraceptive hormones from wastewater by adsorption using electrospun nanofibres membranes

  • Original language description

The work focused on the preparation of several polymeric electrospun nanofibers that include both hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers: polyurethanes (PU Elastollan and PU 918), polyamide (PA), cellulose acetate (CA), waste cigarette electrospun nanofibers {WCENFs), polysulfone (PSU), polyether sulfone (PES), polylactic acid (PLA), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for the simultaneous elimination of four estrogenic hormones (estrone (El), estradiol (E2), ethinylestradiol (EE2), and estriol (E3)) hormones from wastewater. A method was devised for quantifying hormones via HPLC technique using UV-Vis detector. Furthermore, the adsorption activity was tested under different conditions, optimized experimental parameters for determination of suitable kinetic models (pseudofirst-order, pseudo-second-order, Weber and Morris intraparticle diffusion, Elovich, Boyd, and fractional power models), interaction mechanisms, lsotherms (Freundlich and Langmuir), thermodynamics, and ensuring the effectiveness by reusability of membranes over several adsorption-desorption cycles. Based on results from kinetic models for all the polymers, findings showed that El, E2, and EE2 best fitted pseudo-second-order kinetics, while E3 followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. lt was found that polyurethane nanofibers were the best with maximum adsorption capacity of 2.15 mg/g and individua! capacities of 0.801, 0.590, 0.736, and 0.382 mg g-1 for El, E2, EE2, and E3, respectively. The best performing nanofibers (polyurethane (PU 918)) were further modified by coating with polyaniline/polyvinyl alcohol (PANI/PVA) to form filtration membranes evaluated via an optimization study using the CCD model to determine the optimized parameters and enhanced removal of EE2 hormone which proved 90.30% removal efficiency compared to neat PU 918 (55.40%). The removal efficiency remained over 80% for tested six consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. Overall, the reported results proved that the spun nanofibers can be considered promising adsorbent membranes for the remediation of different steroid hormones from water.
