    Injectable anti-inflammatory chitosan/polypyrrole composite hydrogels

  • Original language description

Injectable composite hydrogels based on conductive polymers hold significant promise for the development of various biomaterials. In this study, we introduce a novel method for preparing composite hydrogels with covalently anchored polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles. The hydrogel matrix consists of partially re-acetylated chitosan, crosslinked using cellulose dialdehyde (DAC), which also serves for the covalent anchoring of PPy through aldol condensation. Dynamic covalent bonds formed between chitosan and DAC are disrupted upon application of stimuli, such as pressure or shear, and hydrogel liquifies, allowing direct injectability of the composite. Covalently anchored 40 nm PPy nanoparticles improve the mechanical properties of the composite and provide various beneficial biological effects. ln vitro studies confirmed that prepared composite hydrogels are non-cytotoxic, non-irritating, and antibacterial. They also accelerate wound healing, possess strong antioxidant properties, and modulate the response of macrophages towards non-inflammatory action. Overall, developed systems are promising candidates for the preparation of injectable anti-inflammatory biomaterials. ln vivo tests are currently underway.
