Biocompatible Polypyrrole colloids for biocomposites
Original language description
Polypyrrole (PPy) has great potential for biomedical applications. It can be used as a material for electrostimulation and electrosensing. It is even capable of influencing the immune response. However, its usability is limited by its poor processability and brittleness. Therefore, a colloidal form of PPy is the optimal choice for incorporation into composite materials for biomedical applications. Here, colloidal PPy has been prepared using 1, 2, and 4 wt. % of PVP as a stabilizer. The PPy/PVP _ 1 % and PPy/PVP _2% colloids showed excellent stability under physiological conditions, even after long-term storage. All samples showed low cytotoxicity, with no cytotoxic effects observed for doses of more than 200 µg/mL. Furthermore, even at much lower concentrations, the samples showed strong antioxidant effects and irnmunomodulatory activity based on the scavenging of reactive oxygen species produced by neutrophils and the reduction of IL-6 and NO production by macrophages. The best antibacterial activity was observed for the PPy/PVP _ 2% sample. The minimum inhibitory concentration was 234 µg/mL against S. aureus and E. coli. Compared to the colloidal ANI prepared under the same conditions, these colloidal PPy/PVP also showed lower cytotoxicity together with better antibacterial activity. Overall, the results indicate that the colloidal form of PPy has great potential in biomedical applications, such as hydrogel-based composites.
