Covalent Binging of Palladium Nanoparticles on Chitosan Substrate via Dealdehyde Polysaccharides
Original language description
Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) have emerged as promising catalysts in various chemical syntheses due to their unique properties, such as high catalytic activity and excellent stability. Polysaccharides, such as chitosan and starch, have been used as green and sustainable templates for the creation of PdNPs. These polysaccharides not only act as stabilizing agents for the nanoparticles but also provide a biocompatible and environmentally friendly approach to nanoparticle synthesis. However, common downsides of polysaccharide usage in PdNPs synthesis include their source-dependent non-stoichiometric composition, variation in molecular weight, and lack of reducing groups. This can be easily overcome by simple selective oxidation of polysaccharides using periodate salt, which introduces a pair of highly reactive aldehyde groups per modified polysaccharide unit. The high reactivity of these newly introduced groups can be utilized not only for the synthesis of various metal nanoparticles, but also in a plethora of other applications (crosslinking, conjugation reactions, etc.). Therefore, our work focused on preparing PdNPs using various dialdehyde polysaccharides (DAPs), specifically dialdehyde dextran (DADXA), dialdehyde cellulose (DAC), and dialdehyde alginate (DAAL). The formed PdNPs synthesized and stabilized by DAPs possess a highly reactive layer on their surface, which can be further modified or bound to amine group-containing substrates such as chitosan via Schiff base reaction, as exemplified in this study.
