Around 300 million pairs of shoes are generating (as solid waste) every year. This solid waste not only creat environmental pollution but also expensive to dispose of these composite materials. Near about 40 different materials are employed while manufacturing a single pair of shoes which include leather, canvas, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, rubbers, plastics, and polymeric materials. The goal of this research is to develop a “wearable shoe sole” (mushroom mycelium composite) that could completely biodegrade at the end of its life. The mycelium based composites preparation was investigated upto 5 days at 30 oC under controlled humid condition, in presence of nature based substrates i.e. leaves of Japanese magnolia, Lolium perenne, Liriodendron tulipifera, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus robur using the fungal strain (Ganoderma lucidum ). A dense network of thin hyphae strands (called mycelium) was noticed to grow in time and fuse together into a continuous bed of leaf based materials. These were act as matrix that binds other natural substrates into a lightweight biocomposite. As binder and binding substrates both are from natural based materials, the final composites must be biodegradable but application points of view as “wearable shoe sole” the hydrophobicity, absorbvity, mechanical property etc. were evaluated beside structural analysis of biocomposites. During presentation, this paper will reports about the development and optimization of mycelium based biocomposites which could be a prospective material for the footwear industry.
